How food delivery lockers work
Food delivery lockers work in five steps: a customer places an order; the courier is directed to the lockers instead of the resident's door; the courier scans a code to open an empty compartment at the right temperature; the food is held hot, chilled or ambient; and the recipient receives a notification to collect using their unique PIN or app code. Every interaction is timestamped and logged.
Step-by-step delivery flow
Order placed → courier dispatched → courier arrives at building and is auto-routed to the locker bank via signage, app instructions or building dashboard → courier opens an available compartment of the correct temperature using a one-time code → courier confirms drop-off → recipient receives push notification, SMS or email → recipient enters PIN or scans app QR code → compartment opens → pickup logged.
What happens behind the scenes
The locker software talks to the food delivery platform's API (Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat) or, for direct drops, generates a one-time code at the moment of arrival. Each compartment has individual temperature control, weight sensors, internal LED lighting and a tamper alarm. Building managers see a live dashboard of every compartment's status, occupancy and any exceptions.
Frequently asked questions
Do residents need an app?
No. Residents can collect using a PIN sent by SMS or email. An app is offered for convenience but isn't required.
What if the lockers are full?
The building dashboard escalates to the concierge or building manager and the courier is rerouted to a fallback location. Sizing is calculated to avoid this in normal operation.
Can the same locker hold hot and cold food?
Individual compartments are dedicated to one temperature zone, but a single locker bank typically combines hot, chilled and ambient compartments so any order type can be accommodated.
