Food lockers
Food lockers are secure, temperature-controlled storage units used to hand off food between couriers, kitchens and end customers. Each compartment is individually heated, chilled or kept at ambient temperature, locked with a unique PIN or app code, and tracked through software — keeping food fresh, contactless and protected from theft or tampering until the recipient collects it.
What food lockers are used for
Food lockers solve the last 50 metres of food delivery. Couriers from Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat, Tesco, Ocado, Gorillas, HelloFresh and Gousto drop deliveries into a designated compartment instead of waiting at a reception desk or buzzing residents. Recipients collect at their convenience using a PIN, QR code or app — fully contactless, fully tracked, and the food stays at the right temperature.
How a food locker works
1. Customer places an order through any food delivery, grocery or meal-kit app. 2. The courier arrives at the building and is sent to the food lockers, not the resident's door. 3. The courier scans a code or enters a PIN to open an empty compartment matched to the order's temperature requirement (hot, chilled, or ambient). 4. The recipient receives a notification and collects the food using their unique code. 5. Every drop-off and pick-up is timestamped, photographed, and logged for full audit.
Where food lockers are installed
Build-to-rent (BTR) apartments, purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA), co-living buildings, hotels, offices and co-working spaces. They replace the unmanaged chaos of couriers entering buildings, parcel rooms overflowing with cooling food, and concierge teams handling hundreds of meal drops a week.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a food locker and a parcel locker?
Parcel lockers are ambient-temperature boxes for packages. Food lockers have heated, chilled and ambient compartments, faster pickup windows (typically 15–60 minutes), and integrate with food delivery and grocery platforms — not just parcel carriers.
Do food lockers keep hot food hot?
Yes. Heated compartments hold food at 60–70°C, chilled compartments at 2–5°C, matching UK food safety guidance for short-duration holding while the recipient collects.
How many food lockers does a building need?
Typical sizing for UK buildings is 1 compartment per 8–12 apartments, scaled for peak Friday and Saturday evening demand. A 200-unit BTR building typically deploys 20–25 compartments across hot, chilled and ambient zones.
